THE TENDER MAP

Winner of the Michael Marks Award for Illustration, 2017

An eagerly anticipated new sequence of poetry from Forward shortlisted and Eric Gregory Award-winner Melanie Challenger, illustrated by Rose Ferraby.

Melanie Challenger’s debut collection, Galatea, was published in 2006. Since then, she has worked as a librettist with James Whitbourn on the choral work Annelies. Her ongoing collaboration with composer Mark Simpson has led to The Immortal, which received the South Bank/Sky Arts Award for classical music in 2016 and the chamber opera Pleasure, co-commissioned by Opera North, Royal Opera, and Aldeburgh Music in 2015. Melanie researches and writes on environmental history, and in 2011 she published On Extinction, her first non-fiction book on the subject. She lives in North Yorkshire with her husband and children.

The Tender Map has been beautifully illustrated by artist and archaeologist Rose Ferraby. Rose is an extraordinarily talented artist, with a degree from Cambridge in archaeology, a Masters from Edinburgh in illustration, and a PhD in cultural geography from the University of Exeter. Rose’s recent illustration work includes the 2013 collaboration with Mark Edmonds exploring neolithic stone axe production through poetry and print making, entitled Stonework.
